"I’m trusted to think like the CEO of my area and that autonomy is what I really enjoy."

Cam Slikas - Sales Team Lead - South

What do you do at realestate.co.nz?

First and foremost, I’m a Territory Manager, which means I manage a group of real estate agencies and agents within a certain area and support them in using realestate.co.nz. The objective of a Territory Manager role is to educate agents about our platform and products, to build relationships and provide the best marketing solutions so they can reach more potential buyers and sellers. I’m also a Team Lead, which means I support other Territory Managers to do their jobs.

What’s your career story at realestate.co.nz? Where did you start and where are you now?

I started in July 2019, which seems like yesterday! I came from a banking background and had been working in Melbourne for 11 years. When the time came to return home, I saw this opportunity come up in Wellington and thought that was it for me. Wellington is where my family are and where my heart was.

The company was very different back then, it was a lot smaller and less sophisticated. There were only four salespeople, so I was doing more of a national role that involved travelling the whole country. As we grew and took on more people, it became more geographically based and it also became a lot more sophisticated in terms of our systems and processes.

I really loved the role from the beginning, and I became good at it as my time went on. I developed a lot of great relationships with agents, and I was exposed to so many different situations – like having champagne and oysters at an event one day and getting on an early flight the next morning for a meeting at head office in Auckland. It’s very different to the 9-5 mentality I’d come from in the banking world, but I like that I’m trusted to get on with what I need to do. I now have the pleasure of guiding others new starters, and helping people through some of the learnings that I made along the way.

How much has the company changed?

It’s grown a lot and become more sophisticated; we have more systems and processes in place now, and our product offering has really changed and improved.

I think we’ve forged a clearer identity of who we really are as a company and we’re making headway in terms of our brand and attracting more people to use our site and app. I really think the industry is noticing us now as a key player in the market.

How have you changed?

Coming from a banking background, I’ve had to get more comfortable with less daily structure. This role isn’t a 9 to 5, which means some long days, early flights, and needing to be adaptable and flexible. The role has really enabled me to grow in this area and develop my own structures that work for me.

I’ve also developed a lot as a leader. My approach has changed from ‘this is how it should be done’ to ‘this is what’s expected’ and encouraging people to bring their own diverse thinking and ways of doing things. Acknowledging that my way isn’t necessarily the best way is the Cam that’s changed.

What’s the best part about working at realestate.co.nz?

The days that I really love are spending time out in market with agents, whether it be presenting or helping them to upskill on our site. I also really enjoy working with our team, sharing ideas and talking through things. I’m really energised by being around people, so I love that I get to do that in my role.

I also love the opportunity to essentially run my own business, with support from the top. I’m trusted to think like the CEO of my area and that autonomy is what I really enjoy.

What advice would you give to a new starter?

You only have a short time to bring your fresh perspective and insights, so don’t be afraid to share your ideas and thoughts.

Be prepared for an exciting ride within a fun company, but today is the least amount of change you’ll ever experience.
